Whatever a child learns at a tender age remains with him/her forever. So, it is important that we teach them the right thing because it sticks with them. As children grow, they grow with the habits inhibiting in them.
For example, My father was always a strict man. When my younger sis started going to playschool she started interacting with other children of her age. Those kids had their own way to address their parents and my sis her own way. One fine day, she addressed my father just they way how her playschool mates did and that is when my parents taught her politely that, “This is now how you are supposed to talk to your Dad. Give him respect. Talk to him in respect.” She learnt then and there. From that day till today she has never disrespected our father.
So, whatever you teach your children from the beginning is going to be their final teachings.
You must have guessed by now that this is what we are going to talk about today. Learning while Playing
1. Early To Bed. Early To Rise.
Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.
I have grown up with this quote and now it is part of my life. You can make your child recite this as a poem and see the difference in his/her habits. Try not to let your child sleep late hours in the morning or in night. Children fall asleep quick at night but they usually throw tantrums in the morning. You can engage them in games & activities, lure them for yummy breakfast, or greed them with a reward. Just make sure not to bribe them daily else it will make them greedy for life. This should happen sometimes only.
Who likes monotony? They are aspired adults, they will certainly not like monotonous life if we adults don’t.
2. More Activities. Less Gadgets.
Toddlers are just into gadgets. I am worried. I get worried. I panic. What will happen to our new generation?
Try to engage your toddlers with activities than gadgets. Babies & children are awed by television, cartoons, smart phones. You can’t fool them. They know how to open youtube, search their fav cartoon, increase volume, charge phone.
It is advisable that you do not introduce electronic gadgets to babies soon. Take time. First raise them as a well-mannered kid then hand over a gadget, if you think the time is right!
You can always keep your kid around with you, or ask them to do gardening. Kids love playing in mud. Get them engaged with your pet (if you have any) or teach them different kinds of birds in the sky or outside your window.
3. Teaching Mathematics.
Children learn alphabets and numbers real quick but it is not easy for them to write. You can go a step further and teach more maths like Addition, Subtraction on their fingertips and using abacus.
You can cook and ask your child to go around the house asking each member as how much bread/chapati they will eat. Your child can add chapati of each member and tell you. This will teach him/her to add or subtract.
Similarly, you can put multiplication chart on your fridge and whenever your child will open a fridge will go through the chart. Don’t make it permanent. Change it! Your child will notice a change and will learn something new again.
You can also sit with your toddler and teach mathematics on Abacus. It had bright colors and they will enjoy rolling each beads.
4. Cleanliness & Science.
Cleanliness is Godliness.
Teach him/her how much important is being a hygienic person. You can teach Science by giving examples of the activities (s)he performs daily. For instance, “Wash your hands after using washroom” , “Wash your hands before & after meals” and give reasons to them as why do they have to wash hands.
Similarly, do not bring muddy shoes in the house or teach them how to clean their muddy shoes.
You can teach them how to fold their clothes or blankets after use. Also, assemble and collect their toys after they are done playing.
Like this they can always help you keep your house clean and cleaning will no longer be a task for you
5. Give Respect. Earn Respect.
I had shared you the story of my father & sis. Likewise, you can teach your kid to respect oldies, elders, even their peers. If you give respect, then you earn one.
Giving respect also makes you patience. Always greet guests when they come to your place. Offer them to eat, sit, share with them.
Try not to make your child greedy. This will lead a negative impression of your child and yours in front of guests and others.
Let us teach our children good habits and make it fun at the same time.
